Every painting comes in three portrait sizes. Here's how big each one really is, where it looks best, and how to hang it at the right height.

A few easy rules
- Two-thirds. Over furniture, choose a canvas about half to two-thirds as wide as the piece below it. Over a 72 in sofa, one 24 x 36 in canvas or a pair of 16 x 20s looks right.
- Eye level. Hang so the centre of the canvas is about 57-60 in from the floor.
- Close to the furniture. Above a sofa, bed or console, leave about 8-10 in between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the canvas.
- Pairs and trios. Two or three canvases hung together read as one piece. Leave 2-3 in between them.
Try it before you buy
Cut a sheet of paper or cardboard to the size you're considering and tape it to the wall for a day. It's the quickest way to see how the size sits in the room.
Why the proportions differ
The 12 x 16 in size is 3:4, the 16 x 20 in is 4:5 and the 24 x 36 in is 2:3, so the tallest canvas shows a little more at the top and bottom of the scene. The outermost part of each image also wraps around the sides. We adjust every painting so the main view stays centred in all three.

Care
Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Hang away from direct sun, damp rooms and heat sources such as radiators and fireplaces, and your canvas will keep its colour for years.
