The garden gate, just before supper
Every village has one cottage whose front garden stops people on the pavement. This is that garden in the last warm hour of a July day, when the flowers seem lit from within. Hang it where you pass most often and it feels like being waved in.
The painting
Tall hollyhocks in raspberry and cream lean over a gravel path, with foxgloves and old roses crowding either side as it winds toward a white wooden gate and a stone cottage. The sun sits low behind the chimney, washing everything in honey and apricot, while violet shadows pool on the gravel. Small, broken strokes keep the petals shimmering rather than fixed.
